HemoVision

Where speed and accuracy converge.

HemoVision is a forensic software tool for fast, accurate bloodstain pattern analysis.
It helps investigators reconstruct scenes in 3D, analyze complex patterns in minutes, and create compelling, courtroom-ready visuals — all with precision and ease of use at its core.

Key Challenges in BPA

BPA has a well-established scientific foundation and is used in casework all around the world. Its application in real-world environments, however, presents several key challenges that can impact its efficiency and accuracy.

TIME SENSITIVITY

Crime scene investigators work under significant time constraints. The faster experts can analyze bloodstain evidence, the better they can guide an investigation and allocate resources effectively. BPA, in contrast, is traditionally a labor-intensive and time-consuming process.

MANUAL LIMITATIONS

Techniques such as area of origin determination traditionally require many manual measurements and calculations. In complex environments – when multiple patterns overlap or are spread across multiple surfaces – manual measurements can become impractical or even impossible.

DEPENDENCE ON EXPERIENCE

BPA is a highly specialized discipline with the quality of results being influenced by the analyst’s training and experience. Variations in experience and training can lead to differences in findings.

DISCONNECTED DATA

Effective documentation of bloodstain patterns is critical for analysis and courtroom presentation. While photography and 3D scanning are widespread within the forensic community, integrating such data with BPA findings often remains a challenge.

    Scientifically Validated

Peer-reviewed validation lies at the basis of our methods. Below is a list of publications that explain and validate the methods used by HemoVision.

AREA OF ORIGIN ESTIMATION FROM MULTIPLE ARBITARILY ORIENTED SURFACES USING MARKER-GUIDED STRUCTURE FROM MOTION (2024)

HemoVision enables forensic investigators to analyze even the most complex impact patterns using just 2D photographs. This study presents HemoVision's 3D reconstruction method, and validates its accuracy on a dataset of 5 complex impact patterns.

HEMOVISION: AN AUTOMATED AND VIRTUAL APPROACH TO BLOODSTAIN PATTERN ANALYSIS (2015)

HemoVision uses a marker-based system to automate the analysis of projected bloodstain patterns. Instead of manually measuring stain coordinates, HemoVision calculates them automatically. Read more about HemoVision's marker system in this publication.

CALCULATION OF BLOODSTAIN IMPACT ANGLES USING AN ACTIVE BLOODSTAIN SHAPE MODEL (2014)

Impact angles are traditionally estimated by taking the inverse sine of a stain's width-to-length ratio. HemoVision replaces this manual method with an automated statistical shape model trained on hundreds of example stains, improving objectivity and accuracy. This publications dives into the details of this model and its validation.
